The Relief BBQ @ Cotton'sSun, May 18th

Cotton's is putting on a huge BBQ all-you-can-eat, brunch type thingy, in an effort to raise money for the earthquake relief fund. Half of all the proceeds will go to the Red Cross Society of China. Time: 12pm-5pm. Charge: 150rmb (not including drinks)

Family Fun Day @ SmSh TerritorySun, May 18th

Bohdi Adventures is hosting a Family Fun Day at the "Minority Culture Park" at Dianshan Lake. Starting at 10am, families head on down to enjoy a day of activities in the park: Scavenger hunts, kids bike races, bouncy castle, walking tours, buffet lunch, homemade cupcakes, child day care. Cinestesia @ CULTURAL SECTION: Consulate General of SpainSun, May 18th

A series of three Spanish silent films paired with live music by Shanghai-based musicians. It takes cajones majores to attempt a wacky stunt like this. The third film in the series is Pilar Guerra (1926). Music: Abraham Carmona. Gypsy-jazz music. Limited seating. Free. 7pm.

Excess Luggage @ JZMon, May 19th

Although this band's name doesn't say a whole lot for its self-image, the Norwegian Organ trio fuses innovative improv with classical training for a fine-tuned performance. Excess Baggage includes Vigleik Storaas on piano, Steinar S. Nickelsen on organ and Håkon M. Johansen on drums. Show starts at 10pm. Sister band, The Spare Tires, opens.

Q5 Wine Tasting Event @ Enoteca (Taicang Lu)Tue, May 20th

To celebrate the launch of May's Q5 Wineclub offer, an inaugural tasting event will be taking place on the 20th May at Enoteca (Taicang lu). Oil paintings by 7 Guizhou artists show the painters deep connection with nature and the environment in the newish Wu Jiao art district. These artists work quietly and relentlessly, paying tribute and preserving the beauty of the wilderness. Opens at 10am.

Kaleidoscope: Ren Hong Solo Exhibition @ Studio RougeThu, May 22nd

Studio Rouge on the Bund snags Ren Hong for her second solo show in Shanghai. Ren paints meticulous abstractions of popular images from her childhood. Although the images she channels into her own work were often ones commissioned by Mao, Ren communicates nostalgia for the images of her childhood by painting traditional images "filtered through kaleidoscope patterns."

Nuits Sonores @ Bar RougeThu, May 22nd

One of Europe's biggest music festivals is coming to Shanghai. Normally over 250 artists play the Nuits Sonores festival every year, but the kind people at Bar Rouge have sifted through the chaff and hand picked some of the best DJs from that list and brought them to town. French DJ/Producer, Spitzer, makes some of hottest electro beats around. He is joined by Techno and House DJs, Oxia and Agoria, who are also wildly popular in the dance music fraternity. With a live VJ set by Jose Lagarellos this has all the hall-marks of a big one. Starts: 6pm Cover: 100rmb

The Comedy Tour @ Henry's Brewery & GrillThu, May 22nd

Why did the chicken cross the road? To go to the Comedy Tour at Henry's Brewery, stupid! These, and hopefully many other better jokes, are what's on offer as the Comedy Tour rolls back into Shanghai. World-Class stand-up comedian Tom Shillue ¨C featured on Late Night Show and The Daily Show - will be performing tonight and will be supported by Matt McCarthy - who has recently recorded a TV special for Comedy Central. The Kite Runner @ ArchThu, May 22nd

Based on the # 1 best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner takes place Afghanistan on the brink of war in the 1980s and zooms in on two young friends, Amir and Hassan, about to be separated forever. In the midst of the political turmoil, Amir's fearful act of betrayal will mark their lives forever and set in motion an epic quest for redemption. Much like the book, engrossing and fast-paced, this plot-driven narrative is also suspiciously far-fetched. Suspend disbelief starting at 8pm.

A critically-acclaimed international show by an international artist. Sheng Qi makes his first stop ever in Shanghai at Andrew James Art. No Framework's grand opening exhibition takes a look at grafitti art in a country where public space is tightly monitored (China). "In No Framework Space the walls are white, and not controlled. Yet." One night only. 7:30pm-11:30pm.

Tokyo-based, American photographer James Whitlow Delano will hold a discussion and signing of his book "Empire: Impressions from China" at Glamour Bar. Delano has worked alongside artists like Annie Leibovitz and is famous for his works across Asian countries from Afghanistan to India and along the Silk Road. 4pm-5:30pm.

DJ Joyce Mercedes @ M2Sat, May 24th

Antidote@Hangzhou @ SmSh TerritorySat, May 24th

We don't normally list events for Hanghou but we make an exception in this case because Antidote parties are normally pretty damn good. Expect to be treated to some electro punk, rock, minimal techno and ghetto pop, brought to you by DJS Ben Huang, R3, Fish and Ozone. These guys have been playing events every month for the last 3 years ¨C including the Midi and Modern Sky festivals - so they are well versed in putting on a decent rave. The club itself is set in a forest and next to some lake and takes about 20 minutes to get there on the express train. Starts at 9pm. Cover: 100rmb/80rmb members (includes open bar all night). Although perhaps it would have been better to have this band play on Mother's day, BJ's Magic Mama will be performing at Live bar on May 24. Check 'em out: BJ's latest pretenders to the emo/pop punk throne. Tickets are 35rmb and that includes a drink. Starts 9:30pm.

Electro Trash Charity @ The Art HouseSat, May 24th

A night of Mash-up, electro, house, hip-hop and rock awaits you at The 7 this Saturday. DJs for the event include Alan Shanyinde, DJ Mr Tsang and DJ Sandwich, who will all be rockin and rollin in the luxurious surroundings of this concession villa. Aquatech China @ Shanghai Exhibition CentreWed, May 28th

Another insider look at the process, drinking and waste water makes its China debut at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre in 2008. Organiser Amsterdam RAI will work together with the Shanghai-based exhibition company CHC, supported by The International Water Association, the Water Quality Association and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

Eric Truffaz @ JZThu, May 29th

Swiss-born trumpet player Erik Truffaz is a name to know in the international jazz community. Watch him welding post-beebop and early fusion styles of legend Miles Davis with electronica, acid rock, and hip-hop at JZ. It must be good because it costs 100rmb to get in. Show starts at 10pm.

Water @ ArchThu, May 29th

This 2006 Oscar nominee is set in 1938 British Colonial India against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's rise to power. A widowed pre-teen, Chuyia, brings a spark of life to the residence for Hindu widows she is forced to live it. As time passes, Chuyia must come to terms with some (very) limited options. Hindi with English subtitles. Starts at 8pm.

Inez -DJ Cane Morgan and Vocal Tina @ M2Sat, May 31st

Inez is a dance duo featuring DJ Cane Morgan (now thats an intense sounding name) and Tina, although judging from the picture they look more like either professional magicians or sexy vampires. Check out the flyer after the jump. They've got a hit song called "Stronger." I'm guessing they'll bust that out for you. Presto! Cover is 100rmb (including one standard drink).

Mike Stern @ JZSat, May 31st

Four time GRAMMY nominee, jazz-fusion guitarist and composer, Mike Stern graces the stage of JZ Club. If awards aren't enough for you, get this - Stern got his start as a guitar player with Blood, Sweat & Tears at the tender age of 22. 100 rmb cover charge. Show starts at 10pm.

Naked @ 140 sqm gallerySat, June 7th

There ought to be just over 10 sqm of exhibition space per artist in this provocatively titled group show. Chic-chic/boheme gallery 140 sqm has rounded up 13 Shanghai-based, sexually-inspited artists to show their stuff in the old mansion on Fuxing Lu. "Naked" embraces the increased openness of formerly taboo subject matter and how these new freedoms influence the artists' lives. Opening 4pm-7pm.
